Took my three year old daughter to the Heroes Convention today. It's a three-day event and it is very much a comic book convention. There was one well-stocked card seller I came across (didn't get the name). And there were a few dvd sellers, a few action figure sellers, and a few selling other odd bits. But mostly comics, and the highlight, at least from my pov, was the rather extensive Artist's Alley. Unfortunately, two of the three artists I went to see either took a pass on the convention entirely, or at least today. I REALLY wanted to get Phil Noto to do a sketch for me. And Randy Green as well. Adam Hughes was there, but my experience with him is that unless you are at his table within the first 15 minutes of the convention opening, he will be booked for the whole show. And he won't take commission work to do later. So the coveted Adam Hughes sketch continues to elude me.

Is it just me, or are all the artists at these conventions charging for what they did not used to (i.e., a quick little sketch--3 minutes worth), or charging a LOT for plain ol' anything? Granted, I did have my daughter with me, so I couldn't schmooze and chat as much as I like to.

On the plus side, we got to meet Richard Kiel, who was very nice. And very interesting. My daughter recognized him instantly (yes, she's a Bond junkie already--my wife can't believe it). But her first and only question of him was, "Where's your teeth?"

That was worth the whole day.

My guess would be that the way some people sell sketches/autos they get from the artists at various cons on ebay, the artist may feel they might as well make a few bucks as well.

And funny comment by your daughter to Mr. Kiel
Other than his Bond appearance,I remember him mostly from the Clint Eastwood pic Pale Rider(could not remember, had to go to IMDb to find the title). Roll Eyes

I have a thread for this here if you want to post,

http://nonsportupdate.infopop.cc/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/6236037711/m/2541086011

I went today as well but really didn't buy anything though I had a really good time. I was hoping to find a Topps Batman Begins box or a Artbox Charlie & and the Chocolate Factory box but no luck. I was alittle disappointed that only one card dealer was there.

I saw Richard Kiel and man he's huge. How much was he charging to sign? I was thinking about getting this autograph but didn't. I also saw the Buffy dude and the 70's Captain Marvel guy.

Hope to see some more NSU members there next year Smile

I went yesterday and got some really good sketch cards from a few of the artists (Thanks Mike!). I went directly to Mike Ploog and got an great King Kull skecth for free.....he was sketching and signing with no charge....a rarity for him as I have been told!

Although there was a small amount of dealers selling non-sport, my pal located a box of the new Batman cards stashed amongst some books, purchased it for $50 and got a tire prop card and Michael Caine auto out of it. Boy, was I envious! ( I did see the movie today and was not overly impressed tho!).

AT $500 a table tho, I see why so many card dealers kinda stay away from this one. And I agree, Richard Kiel is one big fella.

I went to this convention 5-8 years ago, and remember a super-cool auction component, where you could bid on cool stuff for charity. Did they still have that?

I believe it was $20.00 or $25.00 for a personally addressed auto on a high quality print.

Yes. I didn't have time to participate, but it did sound like a very cool thing. I think some people got some very cool stuff for good prices.
