I dunno, I really enjoyed WW Philly. It was my first time at a WW show though, so I guess I didn't have the expectations everyone else did.

And I've been to other cons that do one wristband for the entire weekend, no biggie.

I was hoping this thread would just go away. My opinion is all parties have a right to express their opinions (freedom of speech). Kennywood did not enjoy the show and had a right to express his opinion. He did not directly complain about anyone in particular. Dave had a right to express his opinion too but there was no need to start it off by threatening to not do the Philly Show if his post was edited. What did any of this have to do with the Philly Show? Card Talk is Card Talk and the Philly Show is the Philly Show.

Dave works hard getting ready for shows. Most dealers do and they should. Harris works hard “refereeing” Card Talk. It’s a big waste of time and he shouldn’t have to. If there are complaints about what is said, it should become a private thing—not ranting and raving on Card Talk.

It was really hard to get pictures of Rhona because of where the booth was. Everyone was lingering and taking pictures. That's why I've only got a picture of her signing my photo.

Thanks for pics. Anybody have pics of the dealer tables?

Sorry to chime in late.
At the risk of setting-off the squeamish alert for some, I have a different perspective to contribute. Frankly, the central issue is not about personal attacks, emotions, or freedom of speech. It is about being professional. There are certain cardinal rules a professional person should strive to keep.
Consider our current White House occupant who apparently loves to make speeches. No one disagrees that he has the freedom to speak, but in his professional role should he say everything that comes to mind? Should he even attempt to demonize, intimidate or silence the general public? It may seem unfair, but there are rules of conduct that apply to professionals, whether public or private, that do not apply to the folks.
As to criticism, yes it is often uncomfortable for pros to receive criticism, but human history proves that nothing ever changes, grows or improves without it. I encourage the pros to resist assuming that criticism is an automatic negative. Instead think of it as a collector’s plea for a better future.
Whether it be wristbands, long lines, prices or product quality criticisms should be heard, considered, and acted upon when feasible. If you cannot accommodate make an honest effort to communicate like a pro. This is how pros earn the trust and respect of your customers, and the lasting mutual benefits are inestimable.
My compliments to Kennywood for being a caring collector. This hobby desperately needs more authentic critical voices.
I regret being so brief, but I haven’t had my afternoon nap.
If anyone edits my comments I also pledge to never attend another Philly show!!!
I know, I’m bad, but I couldn’t resist. Twak LOL Razz

I was going to stay completely out of this one, but I do have pics of my booth...

I personally think Kennywood's expectations might have been a bit high, or something. There were 5 card dealers and many others that had cards if you spent some time looking for them. There were dozens of artists, many of whom had free promos and were doing commissions. Celebrities? They were there too, yes, they were a bit expensive for the big names but my daughter managed to get a Twilight guest for $20 for a photo and autograph. Pretty much on par with what autos are going for.

Missing? Yes, Marvel, Dark Horse, Top Cow, and DC were all missing from the floor? Personally, I didn't miss them. I don't collect comics and would not have made more than a pass through them anyway.

Wristbands? Is this really an issue? Or is it the fact they didn't give you anything free at the door? Dealers had to wear wristbands too, and mine lasted through the shower every night just fine.

Overall, yes it could have been a better show. I have several suggestions I made to my salesman at Wizard. But to completely dismiss the show as a D and basically telling others it isn't worth the trip out is a little over the top. I had a financial interest in getting as many people through the door as possible, so it affects my interests when people (especially card collectors) don't come because of a completely negative review.

I give the show a B-, lots of room for improvement but there was a lot there for the collector whether it was cards, accessories, or art.

Ed

There are a couple of pics of dealer booths in the pic section of my blog post (at the end of the post) -- including a better pic of Ed's daughter's hat.

The wristband thing is a bit of an issue. . . not a deal breaker, of course, but if you only plan on attending the show on Friday and Sunday like I did . . . well I don't want want to walk around outside of the con for 3-4 days wearing a wristband that I can't take off. I found a way around that and it wasn't an issue.

I don't care about the freebies, but I do like the badge -- I've been collecting them for every con I go to that gives 'em out.

Personally -- if we're handing out grades I'd give the show an A.

To all those giving Chicago Comic-Con less than an A, I'd like to know what shows (besides San Diego) rank higher so I can put them on my list of shows to check out.

Jon

Wristbands? Is this really an issue?

I can't imagine the nightmare of convincing the kids to leave on a wristband for days - hopefully they allowed you to pick up a new one just in case something (scissors) happened to the other one *lol*

As for every other part of this thread - wow. People really are allowed to have their own opinion of shows, ya know. You give it an A - he gives it a C+ - she gives it a D-. That doesn't detract from your enjoyment or lack thereof of the event. Move past it. If you had a good time, phenomenal. If it sucked, sorry you had a rotten time. Maybe next show will be better. If you had specific complaints, I hope that you took the time to drop the promoters an email; or spoke with someone at the show. Even if they don't respond or act on your suggestions, at least you've made them and that's all you can do.

As a card collector, the best show by far is Allentown, nothing but cards and artists, and friends I only get to see at the "Philly" show. Best yet, it's twice a year! Smile
