While the new year is long gone this will be my 1st show of 2009. MegaCon has been around since the early 90's...I have not set up at one since the 2nd one...decided to give it a try this year and see what happens. Since that time MegaCon has grown into the biggest show in FL and one of the biggest in the country. If you are into autographs this is the place to be...tons of media and comic guests to sign your stuff! I will be there setting up Thursday afternoon...the show opens to the public Friday at 1pm....with my usual array of 'Comics and other cool stuff!'....Comics, statues, toys, posters and of course non-sports cards galore! I will try to have free goodies to hand out...Will let you know once I get confirmation on that. 1st show of the year, a bleak economy, and a show I haven't done in over a decade....yes, all signs point to a successful show!! Seriously, I know MegaCon was packed with people last year so I am looking forward to a great weekend. Stop by and say hi!! David This message has been edited. Last edited by: FYI, |

Well, the truck is packed and ready to go....I will be leaving in the morning for setup tomorrow afternoon and ready to start the show on Friday afternoon.
I was supposed to get some goodies to hand out but they did not come in today's mail and UPS has already come and gone so it looks like I won't have anything to pass out this weekend. Hopefully they will show up and I will have them for the Tampa show in March! Looking forward to a great show and seeing lots of people...stop by, bring your trades and say hi!! David |

Just a quick note as I was up WAAAAY too late last night!
1st day of the show went well....good size crowd with people steady most of the day until around 5pm....doors closed at 7. I was surprised by the # of card dealers at the show....I only got to walk around a tiny bit...but there seemed to be at last 5-6 dealers with a good selection on non-sports....last year I did not see any although I know there were 1 or 2. Got to see Saturn 7 yesterday.......maybe he will chime in with a show report. Hope to see more Card Talkers today. Off to breakfast! David |

I had a great day at Megacon. Spent all my money on sketch cards from Rhiannon Owens in artist alley (see the cards in favourite sketch thread). Traded with David of FYI for a box of Fantastic Four archives I can open on open that box day. Now to have husband hide it for me so it will still be sealed for Open the Box day!
Had a great talk with TWS as well. There were indeed a few card dealers there; also recognized K & J from NSU adverts. I would have bought more if I had more money |

Here is your (delayed) show report:
As I said above this was the 1st MegaCon I had set up at since the 2nd one in the Mid-90's. Everything about the con had grown significantly since then....the list of guests, attendance, # of exhibitors, venue. While there were a ton of people in attendance sales were slow....I had fears the continuing problems with the economy would effect sales and this held true. The refrain I repeated throughout the weekend...'The show is about what I expected, not what I hoped but not what I feared.' Friday and Sunday turned out to be not bad at all. Unfortunately Saturday, which is supposed to be the big sales day, was the same as those 2. While not a bad show it was not the roaring start I was hoping for 2009. Sales categories were even across the board: Card sales were 24.5% of my sales barely beating out posters and statues not far behind. Comics was a distant 3rd place followed by toys and books. Since this was a comic show I expected a lot of sales in this genre and was not disappointed: set sales included DC Legacy, Justice League Animated, Marvel Masterpieces 1/2/3 (UD), Spawn widevision, McFarlane Spidey, Batman Master Series, Women of Marvel, & Complete Avengers. Comic inserts also did well with Women of Marvel, a high end Complete Avengers Sketch, DC Legacy, JL Animated, and other various low end inserts. Other set sales included: SWG 1/2 (no takers on my SWG 4 boxes, but lots of lookers), Olivia 1 & 3, 24 Season 4, Wacky Packs ANS, & Indy Masterpieces. Other insert sales included: Cinderella, Disney stickers, Indy Master foils, Bond Girls, ST 35 Anniversary autos, Farscape, Disney Treasury cels, Xena, Battlestar Galactica, Star Wars Phone Cards, and a good volume of activity on the 50 cent box. And of course strong sales on sets, inserts and stickers for Bettie Page...RIP! Got to see Saturnman7...I think on Friday....thanks for stopping buy and looking around Chris! Saw Comicbookfan and hubby on Saturday and did some trading....always good to see you Cheryl! One great thing about this show that hasn't changed over the years is it is an autograph collector's paradise. Sooooooooo many artists and media guests to see and get autos from. I did not have a lot of help with my booth so I did not get out as much as I would have liked. However, highlight of the weekend for me was meeting one of my favorite creators...Frank Cho! He is currently doing work for Marvel, but I 1st found him in his own creation funny book, Liberty Meadows...FUNNIEST BOOK OUT THERE! While getting autos and gushing like a fanboy I asked if we would see any more Meadows? A positive response left me ecstatic...I can't wait Frank!! The show promoters are going to hold a 'Mini-Mega' 2 day show in August. I will have to wait and see if I plan on setting up at that one or not. Well, getting ready for the Tampa show next week and FX in April. Later! David |

What a show,
I have been going to the Mega-Con since the very first one, and each year it get better and better. They have always brought in top talet for people to meet and greet. The celebrities are the newest part of Mega-Con since it started back in the mid 90's. I got to met Mickey Dolenz and his daughter Amy. I also met Richard Le Parmentier seeing as I am a BIG Star Wars person, but I had no idea he also played the head detective in "Who framed Roger Rabbit"(one of my personal favorites). The newest addition in the past few years is anime. The line for some of the anime voice over actors was unreal. I was looking for a few good promo's and found some at Dave's booth (FYI) and it was also nice to see a fellow card talk person. I also go to meet TWS at the show. It was nice to finally meet Tom and put a face to the name. I wish I had the chance to meet comicbookfan, but who knows maybe at FX show in April. Hey take a look at the website: http://www.fxshow.com/ Some top comic book artist's were there also, and through the years I have gotten to know quite a few of the personally becuase they live in the Central Florida area. There were quite a few card dealers out there too, which makes it great when you are looking and if you are like me you are always looking. Again, I found quite a few treats I was looking for. I got a 2 P3(Batman Archieves and Fantastic Four Archieves), and my missing P-K from Spirit. The show was busy Friday, but I was still able to walk up to some of the creators. I was first in line to meet Dan Jurgens(The man who killed Superman) and then I got to met Chris Claremont(X-Men Scribe extrodinare) and I got to see Larry Elmore (found a set of his cards at the show) and had him sign the one the he did for the Dragon Lance series of books(another personal favorite) Saturday - where do I begin - first parking nightmare, but seeing as all the kids are out of school the attendance shot up 200% it was a packed house. Still was able to get around and get what I needed. Sunday - not what I expected, not crowded which meant that dealers were dealing. For the first time I brought my daughter with me. She laughed at all the anime people because I have introduced a little bit of it to her some of the costumes did not make sense. She was on a hunt for Twilight stuff. Man could that stuff bankrupt you if you don't pay attention. With some hagling with her and not the dealers she settled on an anime hat that had the face of a cat and it also had ears(I got out cheap on that one). Well, I have packed all my stuff back to where it belongs - out of the way of my wife (LOL). I alwys look forward to meeting fellow card talk members at the shows I go to. Will give you an update from FX. Hey Harris remember it's SUNNY and HOT in Florida in April and Disney is always a great after the show vacation. Well, I am off for the next 2 days so no making "Magic" til Sunday then it's back to the House of the Mouse for more fun. Have a "Magical" day, Chris ____________________ One must never lose sight of the prize. If you do, you will never find it! |
