Ok so I'm confused. What did Rittenhouse do? I mean you did get 1 limited autograph card. I think you did really well. Unless you wanted something specific then I don't think boxes are for you.

Well, I was kind of hoping for a better pull of auto cards. He ( Hill) may be limited but I can already get him for less than $15 on that site, so that means little. I know it is not Rittenhouse' s fault, but I seem to get the dud boxes every time.

You either pull a relic card or a gallery card out of a single box. Both are 1:48, so you get one or the other in any box.

Yes, I will try to collect them all, but the higher end autos will be out of my reach (based on my budget) unless they are pack pulled, which is mainly what I guess makes it so disappointing.

to be fair 1 box is a hell of a gamble on trying to pull a top auto. I generally am unlucky on even 3 boxes but I keep going just in case.

It should not be a gamble in getting a good box, not at $65+ a pop! For the most part I've never gotten lucky in 1-3 box purchases and can't afford the 1-3 case purchase "luck" seems to require.

Looking at case breakdowns, there is a consistency in the number of 'high-value' cards that are being pulled - roughly 3 a case. Card companies have to offer this consistency in order to make the purchase of a case justifiable and 'fair'. With this consistency, what's stopping dealers from breaking cases, finding the three 'high-value' autograph cards, and then selling the remaining boxes to collectors - knowing full well that the auto cards left are not going to be worth much?

I've not uncovered a high-value card from an individual box in years. I'm not surprised. Sadly the feeling of elation when pulling a rare card from a packet has now been replaced by the feeling of contentment when an eBay auction is won. The true fun of trading card collecting appears to be reserve of the wealthy who can afford to spend big on cases.

Jimtel81 if you find a decent seller they will not cherry pick a case.

I think that this set will minimise the cherry picking of cases when you consider that there might be a sketch card lurking on one of the unopened boxes!!

Apart from this, customers soon become aware if the dealers cherry pick their cases.

Personally we enjoy it when we find out that our customers have got great pulls.

One of our customers who posts on this forum pulled a Lady Catelyn Stark from 1 box!!

I guess at the end of the day it is down to luck what you find in boxes.

I wouldn't blame dealers for cherry picking to be honest. The fact that you (Card Owner) do not is to your credit! Ultimately, it's down to card companies to ensure there is enough value for collectors/dealers looking to break cases, whilst offering a random chance for individual boxes to contain high-end cards.

I agree the random sketches are a good way forward, and hopefully we'll see more of these in other releases.

This is true, John, but I remember (and perhaps you do, too) spending $30-$40 on boxes back in the early to mid 90's with ZERO chance at an autograph or sketch since they didn't really exist at the time. Comic books during those days cost around $1 to $1.50 but now cost $2.99 to $3.99, essentially having tripled in price.

With that kind of inflation on comics, and with the addition of the so-called "hit" cards to non sport boxes in the intervening years, I'm surprised the average box doesn't cost even more than $65.

What I lament about all of this is how the base set is often an afterthought when it used to be the quality of those "regular" cards were the only thing that sold the set in the first place, since there weren't the modern "hits" of today to act as a draw.

Not to mention the chance at one of those "hidden" archive boxes with everything in it as Rittenhouse has done in the past. Does anyone know if they did that for this release?

I certainly did and was so thrilled!
Elephant

Card collecting is always the luck of the draw and sometimes you don't win. I have had my fair share of boxes with mediocre hits. However the last single box I bought prior to GOT was The Tudors and I pulled a sketch card (alongside a dud autograph I may add lol!)

Big hits are not guaranteed with single box purchases, it is a gamble and should be treated as such when deciding whether to part with your cash or not.

I thought seriously about 2 boxes myself but decided against it, I still don't regret that despite pulling the Michelle Fairley card.

One box gets me my base set (or in this case a start on the parallel set), chase to start me off and hopefully a few nice hits. A second box I decided against because if it was a dud I wouldn't have been happy, but I was happy to have a try with one box.

If you're not happy to try with one box then the answer is to take that money you would have spent and buy individual cards from the set.

Buying a box is a gamble, not all boxes in a case have equal value, sometimes you hit the $100 box sometimes you hit the $40 box. Doesn't matter who you buy from that is the way it goes. I will let you know my luck on a 3 box gamble when I get them
