Are we basing rareness on how many were made or how many are out there in the hands of collectors?
Do we even know?

Ace, That was going to be my next topic!!!!! SmileI personally don't think we'll ever know how many of each was made and more importantly how many have survived BUT if someone has the inside scoop on any please share it here.

The additional question is how many are there of each in collectors' hands presently and how long and hard have YOU been looking for one of these 10 if you knew it existed.
IF YOU WANT TO TELL US ABOUT ANY OTHER RARE PROMO YOU THINK SHOULD HAVE BEEN INCLUDED ON THE LIST FEEL FREE TO TELL US WHY IT BELONGS THERE? HOW LONG YOU SEARCHED AND WHETHER YOU NOW OWN IT.

I look at the poll out of curiosity -- I don't follow promos so I have no idea the values.

I did see the ET Card in person once though.

I asked how much it was and the dealer told me 'If you have to ask you can't afford it.' Ultimately he told me how much he was asking, but I can't remember if it was $1,000 or $5,000. This was right after the set was canceled. . .

I think it was around 1997 because I ended up trading for an FUSM sketch. . . although that could have been the same dealer at a different show. . .

Anyway. . .

Here is one of the promos that Albert posted about above, from the 1991 Desert Storm map set by AMP. There are apparently 10 different ones, but I only have this one. What makes them promos is the fact that unlike the regular cards in the set, these are unnumbered, plus they were given out prior to the set's release, apparently.

Here are the front and back. If they don't show, can someone please fix it for me ?

Let me know if anyone wants to see the Superman Man of Steel SW1

I think the problem may be that most of the people on the forum will have never heard of these cards and will definatly never have seen them and so would have no idea what to vote for but would be intrested in taking a look.

I have no idea which is the rarest card, although a lot of us out there think this is an interesting thread.

I know the Avengers A0 promo issued by Cornerstone was limited to 10, so I would guess that the cards on the list have less than 10 printed, otherwise this card would be on the list. Am I right?

............and you see there's my problem as i don't believe anyone has 10 copies of a card printed.

I don't think anyone knows for sure how many of any one card are in existance, all you can do is base your thoughts on the info you have to hand.

The main issue is that most people on this board are not strictly promo collectors. However, I think it's safe to say that most collect the promos included within their particular interest(s). So while I know that the Lion King Super Bowl promo is extremely rare, I have no knowledge of any of the other cards listed with which to compare (and therefore didn't vote).

The A0 was printed on the same sheet as the A7 which was limited to 100 and other promos which were much more common. It is probably true that only 10 were hand-numbered and distributed but once a company goes out of business their archive sometimes get sold. I've seen the sheets but passed on its purchase. There could be at least as many of the cut A0 and A7 promos as there are instances of the most common promo on that sheet. I'm betting, though, that many of the unreleased cut promos were probably destroyed due to space.

Anyone with that sheet, care to share additional info on what else was printed with these two "rare" promos?

Merry Christmas!

I've been following this thread as it's interesting, but I didn't vote because I didn't want to screw up the results of the poll with my limited knowledge of rare promos. Smile

well friends the votes are in after a month and so far Lion King SB1 is the winner followed very closely by Superman SW1. Thank you very much to every one who voted and to anyone who showed interest in this thread Smile.

I think the results show a couple of things. Firt, although there is widespread interest in promo collecting, it is still an arcane area as evidenced by the number of people who read the thread but still didn't know enough about what's rare and how rare some of these cards are to have felt comfortable voting.
Second, I hope that this poll has shed some light on the scarcity and corresponding pecuniary value of these promos which in good economic times (or not) sell, when found, for several hundred dollars to over $1.000.00. Finally, i hope that by reading this thread, more people will find promo card collecting satisfying and begin collecting them avidly.
I have taken the liberty of reprinting below a revised little story I wrote in another thread here a year ago about promos.

"Over the years, like most card collectors, I began to amass hundreds and then thousands of trading cards to complete various sets. However, as my collection grew, an inverse relationship developed between the space available in my house and the area I needed to keep these little pieces of cardboard in(sounds familiar?). Candidly, I also started to get a little tired of seeing 100 pictures of the same T.V show, movie, superhero, actor,etc..
Then, by chance, I discovered the promo card. In the early days, approximately 25 years ago, manufacturers of trading cards began making a small number of pre-production cards for their upcoming card series which they would then send to card dealers and distributors throughout the United States and abroad. This way, the Non-Sports and Sports card shop owners could look at and feel a sample of the upcoming product and decide if they were going to order it by the case, the box or not at all.
Back then, most stores would receive a handful of these sample cards. The owners would give one or two to their best customers, maybe keep one for themselves and toss the rest in the can. After all, these cards had no intrinsic monetary value since they were free and the series they were promoting was a few short months away from being released.
Thus came into being the first promo cards! These cards are known by many names: promo, prototype, sample etc.. A purist may take exception to using these terms interchangeably but for right now, suffice it to say that all of these words describe a trading card that has been made to promote a product, event or card set and is distributed for free.
Collecting promo cards was the perfect solution to the overcrowding and the nascent boredom I was experiencing with traditional card collecting. Afer all, why not collect, for example, just the 1 or 2 Star Trek promo cards issued for a specific set rather than the 100 regular cards ?
This task, however, was easier said than done. there was no guide book to indicate which card company had issued a promo card in advance of the serie's release but also, many announced card sets were cancelled and never produced so that the only card for that team, movie, comic or T.V show was the promo card previously distributed to the dealers and distributors.
Imagine the challenge of first finding a card dealer. How many dealers existed in any given city in the early pre Ebay 1990's? Second, once you found a dealer, you had to find one
who hadn't thrown away the few promo cards he had received from the manufacturer and you had to somehow learn which card companies had sent out promos for sets that were never produced.
As if that weren't enough, it was soon discovered that the promo cards being sent to the dealers and distributors were different from the cards of the acual set with the same image. Some were clearly identifiable as promotional and would be stamped accordingly, but others had no identifiable markings and exhibited only small nuances betwen them and their common regular card relatives. Heated telephone conversations (no internet yet) as to whether a card was or wasn't a promo took place in many parts of the world.
Then in the mid 1990's, Ebay came into existence and for the first time in 1997, a dedicated collector (thank you Todd!) compiled a book devoted only to collecting promo cards. This treatise which has been updated thru 2008 has shed much light on the hobby.
WHY COLLECT PROMOS?
To this day, previously unknown promo cards that were produced by legitimate card companies under legal licenses are still being discovered by astute collectors. Also, as more and more collectors are finding out that a promo card exists for a set of cards they collect, they are seeking to acquire that last elusive card to complete a "master" set making promo card collecting even more popular. Unlike chase cards, sketch cards; prop cards; costume cards or autographed cards, whose scarcity is dictated and manipulated by the manufacturer's print run, a scarce promo card's value is determined by how many have survived the carnage of the early days. Thus, prices for many early to mid 1990's promo cards, for example, are not artificially set because they were never found in packs and there is no concrete information available not only concerning how many were made but more importantly on how many still exist. Nevertheless, there are previoulsy dubbed "scarce" promos from that time period which have appeared on the market much more frequently than originally indicated. The most famous(see infamous) one being the Yoda P3 from the Galaxy Series. So, in many cases, you cannot throw caution to the wind.
Do your homework. Use the price guides for what they were meant to be! Guides...There are many promos that are still not even listed in these guides. Of course, that doesn't mean that every promo not listed in a price guide is automatically scarce but you should try to learn as much as possible about the history of the card you are thinking about acquiring if it doesn't appear to be a common promo.
Were a hundred thousand manufactured and distributed or did just a handful make it out and the rest destroyed? Was it recalled? Was the set never produced leaving only the promo cards? How was a specific promo card distributed? Were only very few made and then selectively handed out to "important people" in the industry? How many have you seen for sale since you've been on Ebay or other auction sites? Etc...
Contact someone on this board you think can help you in answering these qestions. There are many people on NSU card talk that have adanced knowledge of promos and I'm sure would be happy to assist you in your endeavor.
Remember, despite the millions and millions of trading cards being sold on Ebay every year, there are still some promo cards that have NEVER appeared for sale while some others have made a cameo appearance every few years. But hey, if you're astute and knowledgeable enough to find a diamond in the rough there are plenty of unearthed little treasures to still be found out there for a pittance.
Promo card collecting is still in its infancy as compared to stamp, coin, doll or standard card set collecting to name a few. As with these older collectibles, only time will dictate a promo's real scarcity and price. Although the world of promo card collecting has burgeoned over last few years, many dealers and collectors have still not caught on to or appreciated the true rarity of some of these cards, especially those made in the early 1990's thru early 2000's.
As each year passes, many of these "older" promo cards are proving more and more elusive and their value is being positively affected by their confirmed scarcity."

Thanks for that, it was very intresting. Clap

Of all the cards mentioned in the poll i have never seen any of them for sale at a show or on Ebay and i do a lot of shows and a lot of Ebay and have done for many years.

I think this may be why few people have much intrest in them as it is difficult to get intrested in something that you cannot buy or own no matter where you go or what you do.

It would be intresting to hear from people who have these cards as to where they got them from, the stories would make good reading.

I could swear I once read a thread where you mentioned you had an ET motion card there, Wolfie. I took a copy of the front and back that was graciously provided there. Do I remember incorrectly?

Ah-hah that must have been it then. That thread goes back about 2 years, now, that I read it, but it started much earlier than that I think. Thanks Wolfmeister Wink
