I'm guessing most UK folks have seen the tele advert but for those who haven't and for folks not in the UK.

A new partworks has been released (first one £1.99 later issues £3.99) with a chess piece based on those in the huge game Harry plays along with Ron and Hermiony in Harry Potter and the Philosophers stone.

http://www.deagostini.co.uk/harrypotter/

The first piece is approx 6 to 8 inches high and from the add it seems that the wand is used to move the piece with some sort of magnet. Also seems the other pieces do things too

The Rook has a felt base with 4 tiny ball bearings to allow movement. There are magnets around the base and some near the top

Also with issue 1 is a wand with a magnetic tip which seems to work better when repulsing the rook rather than attracting !

Oh and the Pawns "explode" into 3 parts which easily reassemble apparently

It looks like a good way to get Chess to the Potter audience but the tie-in is limited mainly to photos in the text plus a few specials like a Time Turner ( to time moves ! ) and posters etc.

They released this already in Belgium and it was too expensive to start collecting it like Chamedmad said.

If I remember right the Harry Potter Chess series was released last summer in Germany. I bought only the first issue, because it contained a nice 'replica' of Harry Potter's wand. (And that for 2,90€ or £1.99 Smile) But the whole set: no, thank you...

Looks like the board will be given away with the magazine in pieces

Instead of looking at this set as expensive, think of how much it would cost if you was to shell out a lump sum. It looks good value for what it is.

Yes, from what I have seen there will be lots of additional free gifts along the way. It doesn't seem over expensive for the fact that a lot of the pieces actually have moving parts. Considering some of the DVD magazines are charging £7.99 for 3 episodes of a show, this chess set is cheap.

That's also true but you have to notice that a lot of these products ends eventually on flee markets where you can buy them for a lot of less money.
I've encountered some releases after 2-3 years from DeAgnostini on those markets.

my parents bought me the first issue as it was only £1.99, and came with the wand Big Grin

Looks like you get the floating pen aswell as a gift, like the time turner.

I remember my parents doing a dolls house from DeAgnostini years ago, ended up about 200 issues, so i know it was more expensive than buying a dolls house Big Grin

Dont know if ill continue the series, does look fun when its all complete, but for a collecter i would keep it all packaged, less fun Big Grin

Over the long run these part works are more expensive but if you have a limited weekly/monthly budget then it can be very convenient. You don't have to put a large amount of money in one go.

The advert shows the wand "pushing" rather than pulling

you can iirc get back issues sent to you, or the easiest thing to do, is find somewhere that stocks them, usually WHSmith with this kind of mag, and get them to reserve a copy, then go in there and buy them either monthly, or bi monthly, which ever.
